The mother of all dive watches

Safe diving started with decompression science. By allowing the calculation of the decompression stops using the Bühlmann ZH-L 16B calculator, the Decompression 02 deserves the definition of "the mother of all diving watches".

Dr. Bühlmann’s work bridged the gap between theoretical physiology and real-world diving challenges. His legacy is a diving world made exponentially safer, deeper, and more accessible to professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Dr. Bühlmann received international acclaim, including the Oceaneering Award from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society in 1977 and a posthumous lifetime achievement award from Divers Alert Network (DAN) in 1993. His ZH‑L algorithms continue to underpin safe diving practices worldwide, making him a lasting figure in decompression science.

From the biography of Dr. A. Bühlmann

1000 overpressure tests

Dr. Albert Bühlmann incorporated the empirical results obtained in over 1.000 overpressure tests in the sea and in the Druckkammer into a computer model to enable the dive calculations across different variables like: dive height (ABSL), dive length, dive depth, dive profile, breathing gas used and type of dive (single or repetitive).

Decompression stops dial

The Bühlmann Decompression 02 features an entirely new usability. In this second model of the Bühlmann saga, the decompression stops data has been moved to the dial. This patented design allows an easy calculation of the decompression stops in combination with the decompression stops time bezel.

Supporting the quest for the perfect algorithm

Bühlmann Watches and the DAN Europe Medical Research Fund join forces to raise awareness about the quest for the perfect decompression algorithm. The legacy of Prof. Bühlmann, whose decompression tables remain the global standard, will be used to promote DAN Europe’s ongoing research and educational mission.

The partnership between DAN Europe and Bühlmann Watches represents a shared commitment to advancing dive safety through science and legacy. At its core is a mutual belief in the power of research to save lives and in the importance of honuoring the pioneers who laid the groundwork.

A portion of each sale of the Decompression 02 will go directly into DAN Europe's medical research efforts. This contribution helps sustain DAN Europe scientific work in hyperbaric medicine and supports the development of more accurate decompression models.

Advancing diver safety for generations to come.

The quest for the perfect algorithm

DAN Europe and Bühlmann Watches: Advancing dive safety through science, legacy and method

The roots of DAN Europe’s scientific leadership trace back to a profound and enduring relationship between two pioneers: Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann and Prof. Alessandro Marroni. Their collaboration was built on mutual respect, shared curiosity, and a deep commitment to advancing diving medicine.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Marroni and Bühlmann exchanged insights across disciplines, bridging hyperbaric physiology, decompression modelling, and field medicine. Bühlmann’s groundbreaking work on inert gas kinetics and decompression algorithms found fertile ground in Marroni’s applied research and diver assistance programs. Together, they shaped the foundational principles of modern dive safety: precision, personalisation, and prevention.

Their friendship extended beyond conferences and laboratories. Marroni often recalled Bühlmann’s generosity in sharing unpublished data, his openness to critique, and his insistence on scientific integrity. These values became embedded in DAN Europe’s DNA, transforming it from a regional initiative into a global reference point for diving safety and research.

Today, DAN Europe's quest for the perfect algorithm builds on Bühlmann's vision, which Marroni and the next generation of researchers are carrying forward to create the "perfect" decompression model that accounts for individual variability.

This probabilistic, personalised approach to decompression safety is setting a new standard of care.
